Part 2
This magazine
cover is taken from ‘Cosmo Girl UK’, it is the younger equivalent of the female
magazine Cosmopolitan which is for an adult audience; Cosmo Girl is a fashion,
celebrity gossip and advice magazine. The colour scheme is pink in order to
attract the female audience making the target sex of the magazine clear, the
cover also uses bright florescent colours to draw attention to it making it
impossible to miss on a shelf.
The target
audience range for this magazine is for female teenagers aged 15-18, which is
clearly shown by the topics the magazine features such as, ‘Bad boys exposed’,
‘Push his buttons’ and ‘Get fit under your duvet’. These topics may be slightly
too racy for a lower target audience as it features sexual innuendos, which are
not appropriate for a younger target audience. It also features the article
‘476 ways to be irresistible’ and then written on top is ‘Chic but cheap!’
Which is taking into consideration that their target audience may not be
employed and will most probably be in full time education, so will not be
earning their own money, so fashion on a budget will be relevant.
The magazine
sticks to key features of basic magazine design such as using composition, the
background is a clear bold colour in order of not distracting the audience’s
attention making the chosen model stand out, it also uses a rule of thirds.
Furthermore,
the magazine features a celebrity endorsement from Ashley Olsen as the teenage
audience may idolise her and be inclined to buy the magazine just because she’s
the main cover image. Ashley Olsen is using a direct address towards the
audience making it feel personal, as it looks as if she is looking directly at
you. She also is wearing clothes relevant for the current time, innocent and
pouty which represents the feel of the magazine.
Also, in the
top right hand corner of the magazine is an image of Justin Timberlake, a
famous music artist and producer, is featured with his top off, printed
underneath is ‘boys in the buff’. This
is also to attract the audience as they may currently be in a stage of their
lives where they are interested in topics like, boys and dating.
The magazine
also includes the plug ‘Birthday, Give away, Bonanza! This may also attract the
audience as they will believe they have a chance to win something free. The
magazine also creates a set of dominant ideologies about females of this age
range, it gives the impression that all teenage girls are interested in
fashion, sex, boys and drugs. Which in the current time period we live in it is
not necessarily the case, the magazine fails to mention relevant topics such as
homosexuality etc. Which is where the magazine becomes less successful
moreover, creating these ideologies may make teenage girls feel as if they
should be interested in these topics and if they are not they are an outsider,
when in fact they may not be ready or interested.
