Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social group?
Question 2:
How does your media product represent particular social group?
In my
magazine the particular social group aimed at are ‘Indie’ and ‘Alternative’, I
have used two different models to create my magazine styling them both with
this specific look. My first model is
Ellie, aged 17. I chose this shot because she is giving a direct address to the
audience, her face expression is blank, which makes the audience feel as if she
is staring at them. Her head tilted to the side also supports this as she looks
as if she is deep in thought. I have also made her sit down in this image so
she is not ‘up in your face’ making her looked relaxed.
Her hair is
styled big and curly to the side covering the edge of her left eye, and showing
the piercings in her right ear. This hairstyle seems to be represented with the
indie\alternative look, which is why I chose it after researching on the
Internet. I have also styled her in a grey and black print dress, which corresponds
to the backdrop and colour scheme of the magazine, she is also wearing a
wristband from a festival on her right arm, showing an interest in music.
My second
model in my magazine is Jacque aged 16, I have made sure that both of my models
fit the target audience I am catering for. Jacque is also giving the audience a
direct address, he is styled in a kaki green jacket and red shirt. His outfit
is important to symbolise the genre, in a rap magazine the models would be
wearing t-shirts or vests opposed to a shirt as it would be more informal and reflect
that specific audience, making my magazine come across smarter and more formal.
I have also decided to include Jacque to appeal to male readers although my
magazine is aimed specifically at females.
I decided
to use Ellie for my double page spread as well, as I was pleased with how the
first images for the main cover page had come out. I chose to go with the
original hairstyle I had chosen previously before. She is wearing a different
outfit, a plain grey dress to draw attention to her facial expression and hair
also, it corresponds with the back drop again and goes with the colour scheme.
My
mise-en-scene may communicate about the social group I have chosen that they
are cool and edgy, which is what I have tried to create in my magazine. They
could however, be seen to be vain or moody due to not expressing a great deal
of emotion in the images. I have created this look as it is intriguing and may
make the audience want to pick up the magazine and read what its about, I have
also tried to make my models use blank expressions in my magazine, as it
contradicts itself as music is about expressing yourself.
